Haryana Bans Civilian Drone Use Statewide Until May 25 to Strengthen Security Measures

In response to heightened security concerns, the Haryana government has enforced a comprehensive ban on the operation of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across the state until May 25, 2025. The directive, issued by Dr. Sumita Misra, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, aims to mitigate potential threats during this sensitive period.

Objective of the Ban
The prohibition is a preventive measure to counter possible security risks, particularly in light of recent tensions along the India-Pakistan border. Dr. Misra emphasized that unauthorized drone activities could facilitate surveillance or other illicit operations, posing dangers to sensitive areas. The ban aligns with similar restrictions implemented in other Indian states during periods of elevated alertness.

Permitted Operations
Exemptions to the ban are granted to specific entities to ensure the continuity of essential functions. These include the Indian Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Haryana State Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). Other governmental agencies requiring drone usage must obtain prior approval from the respective Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police.
Enforcement Measures
Authorities have been instructed to intensify surveillance efforts to detect unauthorized drone activities. Local police units are to monitor airspace vigilantly, and any sightings of unauthorized drones must be reported immediately for prompt action. Bomb disposal squads are on standby to address any suspicious aerial objects, enhancing the state's preparedness.
Public Awareness Efforts
To ensure public compliance, the government is launching awareness campaigns through print and electronic media. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drone activities to local authorities without delay. Private drone operators, including those in sectors like agriculture, photography, and logistics, will receive formal notifications to suspend operations temporarily.

Civil Defence Initiatives
In addition to the drone ban, Haryana is strengthening its civil defence infrastructure. Volunteer registration camps are being conducted at district and sub-divisional levels, with drills currently active in 10 districts. Volunteers will be provided with identifiable uniforms and will participate in emergency response training. District emergency plans are being updated to include vulnerability assessments of critical infrastructure, ensuring comprehensive preparedness for potential emergencies.
